Tarantulas of the USA with a Focus on the Sky Islands of Arizona and New Species - Michael JacobiThis is a studio-recorded version (produced on April 1, 2020) of the live after-dinner presentation I delivered at the 18th Annual British Tarantula Society Lectures & Dinner on March 14, 2020. It presents an overview of all 29 current species of US Aphonopelma tarantulas and introduces for the first time what will be the 30th species. It also shows a few spiders found in newly sampled mountain ranges that also may be new species. The emphasis is the Madrean Sky Islands of Arizona, explaining the concept and the eight biomes found with increasing elevation while presenting the Marxi-group or Sky Islands Diversity group of Aphonopelma in detail. The six current US Marxi-group theraphosid spiders are A. marxi, A. catalina, A. chiricahua, A. madera, A. peloncillo, and A. vorhiesi, but I also give a sneak peek at what will be the seventh when it is described later this year. Presenting fieldwork I undertook both alone, and in the company of Dr. Brent Hendrixson and others, I also show some new spiders that Brent found along with his colleague and friend Dr. Chris Hamilton. In addition to depicting all known American tarantulas and some new ones, I share some of my other wildlife and landscape photography.
In Search of Costa Rican Tarantulas - Trailer, Part One, and Part TwoIn late 2006, I flew to Costa Rica from Chicago to join three Englishmen, tarantula authority Andrew M. Smith, his long-time friend and traveling companion Paul Carpenter, and Paul's brother Mark for a three-week field trip "In Search of Costa Rican Tarantulas." In 2012, I made a documentary of the trip to be released through Andrew's lovetarantulas.com website. Now, more than eight years later, I have decided to combine the promotional trailer and both parts of the film into one release. The quality isn't great as the images were captured by film cameras and scanned and the video was recorded in 720p with an early point-and-shoot digital camera, but the content is superb as you join a top tarantula hunting team as we find 14 different theraphosid spiders and more.
The First U.S.A. Breeding of Harpactira pulchripesThis new video combines previously released clips with still images and new narration to tell the story of how I obtained the first Golden Blue-legged Baboon Spiders in America, the extreme price, the wild story of how they got from Germany to Florida to California to Chicago, and how I eventually became the first tarantula breeder in the United States to produce this beautiful species in early 2015!
